Overview for Analytical Geometry.
Analytical Geometry is a 4-credit Generic Elective (GE-2(i)) offered by the Department of Mathematics under UGCF 2022, taught in 2025-26 as 3 lectures +1 tutorial (3L+1T) with eligibility Class XII pass with Mathematics (p.1 credit table, maths.du.ac.in/NEP_Syllabi/GE_Math_UGCF2022_Sems(1-8)_Syllabus.pdf). As per the official syllabus on maths.du.ac.in (mirrored at shivaji.du.ac.in and from Appendix-56, EC 08.12.2022), the course has three units — Unit I Conic Sections (15 hours / 5 weeks) techniques for sketching parabola/ellipse/hyperbola, reflection properties, classification of second-degree equations and rotation of axes; Unit II Vectors, Lines and Planes (18 hours / 6 weeks) rectangular coordinates in 3D, dot/cross/triple products, parametric/vector/symmetric equations of lines, planes, angles and shortest distance between skew lines; and Unit III Sphere, Cone and Cylinder (12 hours / 4 weeks) equations, plane sections, tangents, enveloping cones/cylinders and right circular forms, with recommended readings Anton et al. Calculus and Narayan & Mittal Analytical Solid Geometry (pp.1-2). Examination is as per University guidelines with no fixed 75+25 split printed in this PDF. Students often lose marks by not sketching conics with reflection properties or by missing the vector method for shortest distance, both repeated in GE PYQs (as of 12 Sept 2026).
Analytical Geometry is a 4-credit Generic Elective (GE) under Delhi University's UGCF/NEP 2022. It is offered to students from other disciplines as an interdisciplinary elective, usually in Semester 1 to 6. Geometry with coordinates and vectors. This page brings together syllabus, previous year papers and study material so you can see the taught order and exam pattern together.
What you will study (broad UGCF outline — verify from your college): The DU syllabus is organised into four units. For Analytical Geometry, the broad coverage is:
Exam pattern & marking: Typically 4 credits, 75 marks theory + 25 internal/tutorial or 90+10 depending on college. Sections with choices — e.g., answer 4 out of 6. Units 2-3 carry the most weight, with diagram or data questions where applicable. Internal assessment includes tutorials and presentations. Examiners look for unit-wise structure, one relevant example per answer, and a clear conclusion.
How to prepare & what is missing: Start with Units 1-4 above, then solve the PYQs shown on this page to mark which unit each question came from. That mapping tells you which units repeat most (usually the middle units). Right now the IMP questions / detailed notes PDF for this paper may not be uploaded yet — the list below shows what is currently available. If your college shares the official IMP Q&A PDF, it will automatically appear above with an IMP Q tag.
