North vs South vs Off-Campus: How to Actually Choose

Stop asking "which is best?" Ask "which lets me sleep, attend and score for three years?" That one question decides more than any ranking video.

← All Guides

Hey all! Counselling season turns every family group into a ranking war. North is "real DU", South is "chill DU", off-campus is "compromise". I have lived all three through friends' rooms, fests and backlogs, and that framing is wrong. The right question is not prestige. It is sustainability: where will you attend 75%+, sleep 7 hours, and still have energy for one society and PYQs?

Read the three deep-dives first if you haven't: North truth, South truth, off-campus truth. This post is the decision table on top of them.

Honest comparison (no hype)

SocietiesNational-level, cutthroat auditionsStrong, slightly kinderSmaller, you must travel to compete

The 10-minute decision method

  1. Write commute times. Door-to-gate, morning rush, for each option. Over 75 minutes each way is a red flag unless the course gap is huge.
  2. Write department truth. Ask two second-years of that exact department: faculty, strictness, GE scoring, file culture. Department beats campus.
  3. Write money. PG + food + travel x 30 months. A tag you can't afford peacefully becomes a burden by Sem 2.
  4. Pick the sustainable top. Highest option you can attend, sleep and afford together. That is your answer — not the highest cutoff you cleared.
Senior secret: I have never seen an employer ask for campus. I have seen them ask CGPA, internships and "tell me about a society you led". All three grow faster where you are rested and present. Your attendance budget and file system matter more than the pin.

Mistakes toppers avoid

  • Chasing tag over course. A course you hate in a dream college still needs 3 years of 75% attendance. Interest sustains routine.
  • Ignoring GE. A tough GE tanks CGPA anywhere. Use the GE picker before freezing options.
  • Zero PYQ check. Open one past paper per shortlisted course from the archive. If the pattern excites you, you picked right.

Frequently asked questions

Q1: Will off-campus hurt my future?
No — degree says University of Delhi. Future depends on CGPA + skills + internships, built faster where commute is short.

Q2: North for placements?
Only for specific commerce flagships is the pull clearly stronger. For most courses, verify your college cell's last two years, not headlines.

Q3: Can I change later?
Migration is rare and rule-bound. Choose assuming three years here. Don't pick hoping to shift.

Q4: Hostel vs PG?
Hostel where available wins on cost + discipline. Else warden-run PG with senior references. Never pay token unseen.

Q5: Same PYQs?
Yes. Same papers, same syllabus. The 9+ CGPA method is campus-blind.

What to do next

Choose the life you can repeat for 900 days, not the photo you post once. Then commit fully — society, attendance, PYQs — wherever you land.
