About This Collection — English General

English General at Delhi University under NEP/UGCF is built around close reading, not memorising summaries. You are expected to read primary texts — novels, plays, poems, essays — and answer with form-aware analysis. This collection with 260 documents across 1 semesters organises syllabus, PYQs and notes semester-wise so you see the reading order DU actually teaches.

Exam pattern: Most papers are 90 marks theory + 10 internal, or 75+25 depending on college. Questions are typically 10 marks (short) and 15 marks (long), with at least one passage-based question where quoting 1-2 lines matters. Because the syllabus lists specific chapters, not just book names — e.g., Whitman’s “O Captain!” or Morrison’s Beloved Units 1-3 — students who revise by the Unit division score faster.

Marking scheme: Examiners reward three things: accurate textual reference, a clear thesis in the first 3 lines, and awareness of form (sonnet vs dramatic monologue vs free verse). A one-page-per-text sheet with “what’s said / how it’s said / one quote” maps directly to the marking rubric and has helped thousands of DU students.

How to use PYQs here: Open Sem 1’s syllabus tab, then the 10 PYQs for that sem side-by-side. You will notice many concepts repeat — e.g., Chaucer’s General Prologue, Donne’s Valediction, or Post-colonial theory questions. Solve 3 past papers per semester under timed conditions; that alone covers time management and question style.

Pair these papers with the semester notes and the official DU syllabus. Recent years (2023-2025) follow the latest UGCF pattern and carry the most weight. Verify final unit details from your college PDF.

Study Guide — English Honours (DU)

English Honours at Delhi University is a close-reading and form-aware programme. Examiners do not reward plot summaries; they reward accurate textual reference, a clear thesis in the first three lines, and awareness of form (sonnet vs. dramatic monologue vs. free verse). Treat every text as a small machine: what is said, how it is said, and one exact quote.

Exam pattern & marking

Most papers are 90 marks theory + 10 internal (or 75 + 25 depending on college). Expect one passage-based question (quote 1–2 lines), two 15-mark essays, and three 10-mark shorts. A 15-mark answer that opens with a definition, gives three points (concept + example + quote), one limitation, and a concluding “so what?” consistently crosses 11/15.

Common mistakes that cost marks

30-day plan

  1. Days 1–5: Read the primary text; make a one-page sheet per text (what’s said / how it’s said / one quote).
  2. Days 6–10: Solve 2 past papers per semester under timed conditions.
  3. Days 11–15: Map every PYQ question to its Unit; note which Units repeat.
  4. Days 16–20: Write 15-mark answers using the 4-part template; get feedback.
  5. Days 21–25: Revise one-page sheets; memorise key quotes with line numbers.
  6. Days 26–30: Full mock papers; fix time management.

Verify final paper codes and unit lists from your college handout — this guide follows the broad UGCF/NEP outline.
